Description

Preserved in a herbarium specimen (“Tradescantia mundula ‘Fairy Wings'”, 2023).

SpeciesTradescantia mundula.
Growth habitTrailing or creeping habit, with stems which do not support themselves vertically.
FoliageStems are 1-2.5mm thick with internodes 1-2.5cm long, greyish olive green (NN137A) to dark greyish red (N186C), smooth except for a single line of tiny hairs running along the length.

Leaves are pointed ovals, 2.5-5cm long and 1.5-2.5cm wide, with marginal variegation, scattered with bristly hairs on upper and lower surfaces.

On the upper surfaces, the pale background is light reddish purpe (N75A) to very pale purple (76D). The dark stripes are a mixture of colours ranging from greyish olive green (NN137A) to moderate yellow green (137C).

The undersides are greyish yellow green (191B) to dark purple (79A) in dark areas, and light reddish purple (N75A) to pinkish white (N155B) in pale areas. Leaf sheaths are greyish yellow green (194B) to light purplish grey (N187D).
FlowersFlowers are 7-10mm across. Petals are pure white and slightly pointed. Anthers are yellow, stamen filaments and pistil are white.
