Established with a description by P.Th. Warmerdam B.V. (2002). Because it is a legal protection registration, the name must be accepted permanently over any other, even after the registration has expired (Brickell et al., 2016, Arts. 11.3, 11.4).
OriginsSeedling from a cross between Tradescantia (Andersoniana Group) ‘Innocence’ and Tradescantia (Andersoniana Group) ‘Rubra’ (P.Th. Warmerdam B.V., 2002).
ClassificationLike other hardy garden hybrids, it is now placed in the Andersoniana Group. These hybrids are sometimes mislabelled as Tradescantia virginiana or the invalid botanical hybrid Tradescantia × andersoniana.
Legal protectionNone.

Previously protected by plant breeder’s rights in the Netherlands, but protection was surrendered in 2004 (P.Th. Warmerdam B.V., 2002).

Description

Described by P.Th. Warmerdam B.V. (2002), with reference to the RHS Colour Chart (4th edition).

Cultivar groupTradescantia Andersoniana Group.
Growth habit50cm high.
FoliageStems are hairless, internodes about 10cm long and 7mm wide, green with fairly strong red or purple staining close to the leaves.

Leaves are hairless except the margin near the base, about 20-25cm long and 1.5cm wide, with a sheath about 2cm long. Dull green with red or purple veins.
FlowersFlower stalks are about 2cm long, purple red (71A), slightly hairy.

Sepals are about 12mm long and 7mm wide, hairy outside, green with red or purple margin.

Petals are round with a slightly pointed rop, white (155C) with a mottled purple cast (N81A). Stamen filaments and style are purple (N81A), anthers are yellow.
