Established by Booth (1840, p. 113). Because it was published before 1959, the Latin name with no description can be accepted (Brickell et al., 2016, Arts. 21.11, 27.1).

It was originally spelled ‘Coccineo’, but the grammatical gender is corrected to match the genus (Brickell et al., 2016, Art. 21.8).

ClassificationLike other hardy garden hybrids, it is now placed in the Andersoniana Group. These hybrids are sometimes mislabelled as Tradescantia virginiana or the invalid botanical hybrid Tradescantia × andersoniana.
