‘Caerulea’

Details

Full nameTradescantia (Andersoniana Group) ‘Caerulea’.
Name statusAccepted, the valid name for a unique cultivar.

First published by Wrede (1819, p. 55). Because it was published before 1959, the Latin name with nod escription can be established (Brickell et al., 2016, Arts. 21.11, 27.1).

The name was originally spelled ‘Caeruleo’ (Wrede, 1819, p. 55), but the grammatical gender is corrected to match the genus (Brickell et al., 2016, Art. 21.8). It has also been spelled ‘Coerulea’ (Barr & Sons, 1922, p. 57).
OriginsUnknown.
ClassificationLike other hardy garden hybrids, it is now placed in the Andersoniana Group. These hybrids are sometimes mislabelled as Tradescantia virginiana or the invalid botanical hybrid Tradescantia × andersoniana.
Legal protectionNone.
AvailabilityIt was last listed for sale by Royal Horticultural Society (1987, p. 391), but it may still be rarely in cultivation in Europe.
