| Species | Tradescantia zebrina. |
| Growth habit | Stems are initially upright, but soon begin to sprawl and trail as they get longer. |
| Foliage | Stems are 1.5-3mm wide, with internodes 1-3.5cm long, smooth and hairless. The leaves are also overlaid with a slightly variable pattern of pale marginal variegation. The base colour of the upper leaf surfaces is dark yellowish green (189A) to dark greyish purple (N92A), and the silver bands are greenish grey (202C) to pinkish grey (201D). The pale sectors range from purplish grey (N187C) to strong reddish purple (N78A). The leaf undersides are dark purplish red (N79A) to dark purplish grey (N187A) under dark areas and strong reddish purple (N78A) under light areas. The sheaths are purplish grey (N187C) to light yellow green (144D). |
| Flowers | 12-15mm across. Petals are light reddish purple (N75A) with white at the base. Stamen filaments, anthers, and pistil are white. |
